Fitbit Air vs Pixel Watch 4 vs Pixel Watch 5: Which Google Wearable?

Quick Verdict

Buy the Fitbit Air at $99.99 if you want passive 24/7 health tracking, about a week of battery and nothing to look at on your wrist. Buy a Pixel Watch if you want a real smartwatch, and buy the Pixel Watch 5 rather than the Pixel Watch 4 unless you find the older one discounted. That is the part this comparison originally missed: the Pixel Watch 5 went on sale on August 20, 2026 at $399 for the 41mm Wi-Fi model, so "Pixel Watch" now means the 5, and the Pixel Watch 4 is the clearance option at a 2025 launch price of $349.99.

The catch is the subscription, and for the cheapest device it matters more than the hardware. All three feed the same Google Health app, but the Gemini-powered Google Health Coach that Google puts at the centre of the pitch sits behind Google Health Premium at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year. The Fitbit Air includes a three month trial. After that, two years of Premium costs about $240 at the monthly rate, which is more than twice what the Air itself cost.

What Changed Since This Comparison Was Written

This page was first published in May 2026, days after Google announced the Fitbit Air, and it compared the Air against the Pixel Watch 4 because that was the current Pixel Watch. Two things have happened since.

First, the Pixel Watch 5 shipped on August 20, 2026, after being unveiled on August 12 at Google's Pixel 11 event. Tech Advisor lists it at $399 for 41mm Wi-Fi, $429 for 45mm Wi-Fi, $499 for 41mm LTE and $529 for 45mm LTE, with a Steph Curry special edition at $579. Every US price moved up against the Pixel Watch 4. We covered that launch separately in our Pixel Watch 5 price and features piece.

Second, the Fitbit app itself became Google Health on May 19, 2026. Google's own help page describes the rebuild as four tabs, Today, Fitness, Sleep and Health, and confirms that several older Fitbit features, including sleep profiles and badges, were removed in the process. The shared app in this comparison is no longer the Fitbit app these devices were originally sold against.

LTE adds $100 on both Pixel Watch 4 sizes and $100 on both Pixel Watch 5 sizes. Where our sources did not publish a number we have said so rather than estimated one.

What Fitbit Air Is

Fitbit Air is Google's smallest and cheapest tracker, sold as a screenless band for 24/7 wear. Google's announcement lists 24/7 heart rate, heart rhythm monitoring with AFib alerts, SpO2, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep stages and duration, plus automatic workout detection. Battery is quoted at up to a week, with a five minute charge giving a full day.

There is no notification surface and no app store. Everything you look at lives in the Google Health app on your phone.

What the Pixel Watch Line Is

Both Pixel Watch generations are full Wear OS smartwatches: GPS, contactless payments, app notifications, assistant and third-party apps on a touchscreen. Android Authority's Pixel Watch 4 specification list counts twelve sensors, including a multi-path optical heart rate sensor, a blood oxygen sensor, a skin temperature sensor and an electrical sensor for cEDA.

The Pixel Watch 5 adds pulse-loss detection from day one, a Daily Readiness Score built on sleep and exertion, improved GPS for outdoor running, overnight breathing assessment and a Morning Brief, and Tech Advisor describes it as about 20 percent faster than its predecessor. Some Pixel Watch 5 health features were listed as coming soon on launch day rather than shipping, which the launch piece linked above goes through.

Same App, Different Hardware

The first version of this page said the choice is only about form factor because the health stack is identical. That is close but not exact, and the difference matters if the AI coaching is the reason you are buying.

Google's help documentation states that the Google Health Coach is available to Premium subscribers with a Fitbit or Pixel Watch device, who are at least 18, in supported countries. The coach is therefore gated three ways: by subscription, by owning Google hardware, and by where you live. A Fitbit Air and a Pixel Watch both satisfy the hardware condition, so on that axis they are genuinely equivalent. None of them gives you the coach for free once the trial ends.

Cardio Load Now Counts Other Companies' Watches

One recent change matters if you already own something else. Google Health version 5.09 began rolling out on September 25, 2026, and its release notes say that "the workouts you track in other apps and devices and sync to Google Health can count toward your Cardio Load, as long as the other app or device has tracked your heart rate data during that workout."

Before this, a Garmin or Apple Watch workout imported into Google Health appeared in the history but contributed nothing to Cardio Load. The condition is heart rate data in the imported workout, and Google still calculates its own Cardio Load figure rather than importing another company's training metrics.

The practical effect is that Google hardware is no longer the only way to keep Cardio Load honest, which slightly weakens the case for buying a Fitbit Air purely to feed the app.

Battery and Wear

Fitbit Air's quoted week of battery means you can wear it through full sleep cycles without planning a charge. Both Pixel Watch generations are day-to-two-day devices, so sleep tracking means finding a charging window somewhere in your day.

For passive recovery and sleep data, the Air's continuous wear is the real advantage. For workouts with on-wrist GPS, notifications and payments, a Pixel Watch wins and it is not close.

Who Should Choose What

Choose the Fitbit Air if you want health and sleep data without another screen, and you accept that the coach becomes a paid add-on after three months.

Choose the Pixel Watch 5 if you want a smartwatch and you are buying new in 2026. Choose the Pixel Watch 4 only if the discount is large enough to offset a year-older device, since it launched at $349.99 against the Pixel Watch 5 at $399.

Running both is also reasonable: the watch for workouts and notifications, the Air for 24/7 wear. At $99.99 plus $399 the pair costs about as much as one high-end smartwatch, and Google Health reconciles the two.

Where Beacon Fits

Beacon is our app, so read this as a description of the plumbing rather than a recommendation. It does not replace Google Health, and it does not import Google's Cardio Load or any other company's score.

Fitbit Air is a Fitbit device, and Beacon has no direct Fitbit or Google Health connection. Because Fitbit does not share with Apple Health, a Fitbit Air has no route into Beacon today.

Pixel Watch is a different story. Beacon is iPhone only and has no direct Pixel Watch or Google Health connection. On an iPhone paired with a Pixel Watch that route does not exist, and we would rather say so than guess. Beacon's integrations page lists the current route for each source, and the features page covers what Beacon does with the data once it arrives.

FAQ

Is Fitbit Air better than Pixel Watch 4 for health tracking?

For passive recovery and sleep tracking, Fitbit Air's quoted week of battery and continuous wear give it a practical edge, because you never take it off to charge. For workout tracking with on-wrist GPS, notifications and payments, a Pixel Watch is far more capable. Both feed the same Google Health app.

Should I buy the Pixel Watch 4 or the Pixel Watch 5?

Buy the Pixel Watch 5 if you are buying new. It went on sale on August 20, 2026 at $399 for the 41mm Wi-Fi model, against the Pixel Watch 4's August 2025 launch price of $349.99, and it adds pulse-loss detection, a Daily Readiness Score and improved running GPS. The Pixel Watch 4 only makes sense if the discount is large.

How much does Google Health Premium cost, and do I need it?

Google Health Premium is $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, up from Fitbit Premium's $79.99 per year. You need it for the Gemini-powered Google Health Coach, which Google also limits to people with a Fitbit or Pixel Watch device who are at least 18 and in a supported country. Basic tracking works without it, and the Fitbit Air includes a three month trial.

Do Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch use the same app?

Yes. Both feed Google Health, which replaced the Fitbit app on May 19, 2026 as an over-the-air update. The redesigned app has four tabs, Today, Fitness, Sleep and Health, and Google removed some older Fitbit features such as sleep profiles and badges in the change.

Will my Garmin or Apple Watch workouts count toward Google Health Cardio Load?

Since Google Health 5.09, which began rolling out on September 25, 2026, yes, provided the imported workout includes heart rate data from the other app or device. Google still calculates its own Cardio Load rather than importing another company's training metrics, so Garmin's Training Readiness does not carry across.

Can Beacon read Fitbit Air or Pixel Watch data?

Not today. Beacon has no direct Fitbit, Pixel Watch or Google Health connection, and neither device writes to Apple Health, so neither has a route into Beacon.
